Here is another way you can win

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Are you a Low Cadence reader and want some free coffee? Get a friend to fan the Low Cadence Facebook page and then leave a comment on the page with your name and you will be entered into a drawing for a free pound of our Beans with a Mission. Also, $20 will be given toward the 2010 Ride for Mike in your name. Drawing will be Memorial Day, May 31st.

By the way, your friend also gets a pound. If you currently are not a fan of the page, just visit the page and click the “Like” button at the top. You will then be entered into the drawing.

But wait… that’s not all! You may recall that I asked Low Cadence readers to nominate the blog for the CrankListed.com cycling blog directory. The nominations round of Crank was held so that the editors could select the top 5 blogs to be in for the final voting (going on now).  This way they were able to provide contenders who were selected by cycling blog fans and peers.  CrankListed.com felt this opened up the possibility of all cycling blogs to be in for the running, and put all blogs on a pretty equal playing field.

Hundreds of different cycling blogs were nominated, and now things get serious with the top 5 battling it out for top dog status.  I would appreciate it if you could swing by CrankListed.com and vote for Low Cadence under the Road Cycling category. While you are at it, be sure to vote for your favorite blog in each category….if there is a blog you’re not familiar with, check them out and see what they have to offer.

Not sure exactly what direction the blog will take over the next several weeks, but I’m certain I’ll be here. Thank you for being here as well.

I need your help choosing a jersey

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Don’t have much to post about today. I’m going through a rest period and I’ve also been feeling a little flat. Saturday’s ride was good. Tonight should be fun out at the Tuesday Night World Championships. I really think I need to get to the coming Saturday when I’ll put my race wheels back on and get with it!

Things have slowed down a bit with the 2010 Ride For Mike as well. Much of that has to do with me feeling a bit flat. I’ve been going on such a high with the plans for the event that I knew I would have to come down at some point! However, I did get a some more jersey designs. It is neat to see them, but I would be more excited to see them delivered to Hincapie Sportswear and this long awaited process get underway!

You can help by telling me which design you like the most:

Original LowCadence Jersey Design

This is the original design – with a slight change in the location of the sponsor logos on the back. We’re going to need to find a way to enlarge those logos in order to better expose the sponsors. Do you like this one, or would you prefer one of the next two options?

Jersey Option Number Two

Jersey Option Number Two (click to enlarge)

The Beautiful Redhead really likes this one. She thinks the addition of the white helps the design “pop” a little more and also gives a better contrast for some of the logos. I’m thinking it might also be a good way to work out the logo problem. We could have one sponsor logo on the front and remove it from the back and then spread the three remaining logos across the pockets. Hmmmmm… any other ideas?

The Third Jersey Option

The Third Jersey Option (click to enlarge)

The third one expands the white portions introduced in the second option. It would make the adjustment of the logos a little harder, but it does give the jersey a little more “motion.”  So, what do you think? One, Two, or Three?

Have you?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

It is exciting to see the 2010 Ride For Mike fund grow to $2500. We have had a great start to the campaign, but there is still a ways to go. Have you given?

We have a new batch of Low Cadence Coffee on hand. I’m looking forward to handing over pounds and pounds of the stuff to people who choose to give $15 or more to the project. Remember, 100% of the money you give goes to the fund. The coffee is my thanks to you.

The question I keep getting asked is, “Have you gotten the kits ready yet?” This has taken a bit longer than I would have wished. However, we are still within the window for getting them in and produced before the Ride For Mike. The designs are on their way to Hincapie Sportswear. I hope to be taking orders before June.

A couple of other reminders for you:

Thank you for all the support! This past week the blog had the best daily average traffic ever. My stats also show that there are lots of loyal readers out there. I want you to know that I really appreciate your interest.

Getting off to an awesome start!

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

This morning I arrived in my office to find the latest copy of the Voice of the Alumni, the official publication of the Bob Jones University Alumni Association.  I anticipated this issue because the creation of the Michael T. McCaskill Memorial Scholarship was to be announced. Flipping through the pages, I found what I was looking for!

Then I checked my email to find that over night more than $2000 had come in toward the Ride For Mike! The project is getting off to an awesome start! I’m getting more excited about the ride just because so many other people in Memphis, Greenville, and Raleigh are.

Finally, as I flipped to the back of the magazine, I found the short piece on the Ride for Mike. The important thing for me was that I wanted to find the RideForMike.com URL listed. Ahhh, there is was in bold letters. Here’s hoping there will be more people taking part because they see this.

Jonathan Pait

Photo with Ride For Mike article

For Jonathan Pait ’91, pedaling a bicycle for six hours a day is nothing out of the ordinary.

Jonathan, who seres as the Alumni Association’s Events and Services manager, has participated in cycling events each year since 2006. Last year he relayed with a team of cyclists from the Palmetto Peloton Project, riding in six-hour shifts from Greenville, S.C., all the way to Austin, Texas. Their efforts raised tens of thousands of dollars for cancer research — a cause with a great personal significance for Jonathan. His cycling efforts have all been in memory of his friend Mike McCaskill ‘o3, who died in 2007 of a brain tumor.

But Jonathan’s next challenge promises to be more demanding than anything he’s attempted so far. In the fall of 2010, Jonathan plans to ride solo from Memphis, Tenn. (Mike’s birthplace), to Greenville (where Mike attended BJU) and then on to Apex, N.C. (the Raleigh-area town where Mike served as a youth pastor). That a distance of more than 700 miles — all to be covered in one week.

And this time, the money Jonathan raises will be going not toward cancer research, but directly to a DNSF scholarship in Mike’s honor, to help ministerial students afford college.

“This is going to be tough,” says Jonathan, nothing the difficulties of riding solo and covering 100 miles each day for a week. but the cause outweighs the difficulties: “This ride at its heart is really to remember Mike,” Jonathan says. “This year I did not want to focus on the battle surrounding Mike’s death. What I want to do is focus on drawing attention to what he lived for — to serve Christ as a youth minister. I couldn’t think of a better way to do so than to work with the McCaskills in raising money for this scholarship.”

To learn more about the journey and to find out how you can support Jonathan’s effort, visit RideForMike.com.

Thanks to everyone who has participated by giving so far. We are on our way to meeting the goal of $10,000 and, frankly, I think I may have underestimated the generosity of people who have joined me in this project. Not only that, but I also learned yesterday that there are a couple of guys in Memphis who plan to ride out with me for a couple of days! That will be such a huge help to me!

Wow! This is so much fun!

Helmet view of a crit

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

It has been awhile since I have put up any video of a ride. I decided to wear my helmet cam in the Spartanburg Regional Cycling Classic. It reminded me of why I don’t do that very often! It is hard to get the camera angle correct and you would be surprised how tired it makes your neck having just that little bit of weight up on your head! Anyway, here it is… for what it is.

I did flip the switch to get the finish of the race. Unfortunately, if you don’t turn the camera on ever so often, it automatically turns off. It must have been off too long, so when I went to record the finish the camera didn’t work.

I’m going to give it another try at one of the St. Francis Sports Medicine Summer Series races. I think I have a way to make it capture more of what is going on in front of me. So, stay tuned!

One last thing… my videos on YouTube have been viewed over 100,000 times. Up until this video, these videos have been sponsored by Quarq CinQo. I’m coming up with a new sponsor project that I will introduce soon. This sponsor will be featured in all the videos I produce in the next year. They will be a blog sponsor and will also get exposure on equipment. If you would like to get a head start on being this featured sponsor, you can contact me at lowcadence@pait.org.

Housekeeping

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

I am sorry that the blog has been focusing lately on… well… the blog. Things are beginning to slow down a bit on that front. So, I should be able to get back to focusing on writing about cycling. Just a couple of housekeeping things to start off the week.

Low Cadence now has a Facebook page. Up to this point, LowCadence.com posts have gone directly onto my personal Facebook page. The idea is to work harder to give the blog its own identity and keep it from cluttering my personal space. It will also be a good place to catalog what is happening on the site.

I need your help. I would like to be able to create a Low Cadence username for the page. I have to have 25 “fans” in order to have one. If you like LowCadence.com, would you please consider “liking” the Facebook page? Funny thing is it makes me kind of nervous. What if no one actually likes the blog!?!

So, what is behind all of these changes? I have up to this point viewed the site as just a way to chronicle my own adventures in learning how to cycle – basically a personal journal for myself to look back on someday when I am old. However, I have found that there are people who share in this experience with me. I’ve also found they want to take an active role in what I’m doing here.

That is where Ride For Mike comes in. You will see that the Ride For Mike link is now active at the top of the page. This is the way I plan to organize and promote my designated charity ride each year. You can read more about the origins of the ride at the page.

I have been inspired by FatCyclist. He has taken the fun of writing a blog and turned it into a cancer fighting machine as he has used his blog to raise money for cancer research. True, I do not have the same compelling personal story, but I do know that the readers of Low Cadence are just as giving and inspiring as any reader of Elden’s blog.

The result of this is that I now feel a greater compunction to promote the blog. It is not so much so that people will read what I write — it is more out of a fear that I will set goals for my Ride For Mike that I won’t be able to accomplish! I’m going to need plenty of friends to help me along the way.

Yes, I hope you will give toward the Ride For Mike, but you can also help by spreading the word about Low Cadence: Thoughts of a cyclist. A tangible way to do that – and my last request of the day – is for you to nominate the site at CrankListed.com. Nominations are now being placed for cycling blogs for this planned listing of top cycling blogs. The top 5 nominated blogs within each category will be listed. It would be kind of fun to see if Low Cadence could make it into the Road Cycling category.

Either way, thank you for reading and for your support. I’ll put my broom away now and get back to the bike!

Low Cadence is moving on

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

When I started LowCadence.com, I decided to use it as an experiment with working within the limitations of your $4 a month services such as GoDaddy.com. Actually, GoDaddy.com is exactly the service I chose. Initially things seemed to be working out. However, as the blog has grown in readership… so have my problems.

It is time to move on. Of course, the obvious place for me is my own company, The Worthwhile Company. We’re in the midst of making the necessary changes to get the site moved over to our servers. Any time you attempt something like this there can be some issues. One of the things I’m a little concerned about is the DNS propagation. I want to warn you that there may be a time soon when you might find the site down.

It will be down because we will need to change the physical address to which the domain LowCadence.com points. Servers around the Internet will need to learn to route the requests to the new location. Unfortunately, not all of those servers update as quickly as others. So, it is possible you might be sent to the old location which will not exist anymore.

Thanks for your patience. I believe you are going to see a distinct difference in the speed with which the site will load. I really should have moved the site to The Worthwhile Company some time ago, but you know how it can be with the plumbers own home!

Experiment finished. Lessons learned. Low Cadence is moving on!

David Mruz demonstrates proper coffee sniffing technique

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

I’ve been thankful for Dr. David Mruz of Eastside Family Chiropractic for some time. After last season, I really messed my body up. Because of some injuries I was riding incorrectly on my bike. Doc straightened me out. He also helped me discover that I was riding on a bent saddle. With his help I’m now riding without pain.

Now I have another reason to be thankful. He has demonstrated the proper technique for receiving your Low Cadence coffee. He even sent some pictures to share with the readers.

Dr. David Mruz

First, show everyone that you got your pound of goodness

Second, breathe in the fresh aroma of newly roasted beans

Third, open... NO! You have to grind it first!

It has been fun delivering the coffee around to the various locals who have joined in support of the 2010 Ride for Mike by giving. You too can play a part. Everyone giving $15 or more to the ride and requests the coffee will receive a pound of the bean. Remember, 100% of what you give will go to the Michael T. McCaskill scholarship fund. The coffee is my gift to you.

Now it’s time to go get another cup! Get your own by contacting me at lowcadence@pait.org.

Low Cadence kit design – come get the goodness!

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

It has taken a while, but the design for the first ever Low Cadence cycling kit is complete! We are currently readying the design for Hincapie Sportswear who will be creating the custom kits for us. You can express your interest in a kit at the contact information below.

Why have a LowCadence.com kit? The idea actually came about as I was planning the 2010 Ride For Mike. Looking for fun ways to raise money for ride, I decided to check on what it would take to get a kit made for the ride. Then I realized that people would not have as much of a connection with Ride for Mike and there might not be as many people willing to purchase them.

I sat down with Chris Hartzler and we talked about what approach we should take. It only made sense to create a kit that more people would associate with and would have life beyond the ride. Branding the kit with Low Cadence was the way to go. I then commissioned Chris to create a kit that “even if people had no idea what Low Cadence is, they would want to have one.” Here’s hoping that he succeeded!

The pricing for the kits is not set as of this time. I have to get a better idea on the cost for production. However, this will be a fund raising endeavor with ALL the money going to the 2010 Ride for Mike. Are you interested? It would be very helpful that if you would like to have a kit you contact me at lowcadence@pait.org. This does not obligate you to purchase a kit, but it does help me better gauge interest and wrap up the timing of the project. The more initial interest, the sooner I can get them.

Thanks for reading and supporting LowCadence.com.

Welcome Hartzler Haus

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Going to take a little break from writing about the bike, training, and racing. Today I’m just going to take a moment to say a big thank you and introduce you to a new sponsor of the Low Cadence blog. One of the great things about this blog is the wonderful people it has allowed me to meet and how it has brought talented people together to help me.

Chris Hartzler is a co-worker here at the University. He is the creative director for Creative Services. He is also a cyclist.

Chris has helped me with RideForMike.com in the past, but this year he has taken it up a notch! Through his own freelance shop he has created a new brand for Low Cadence as well as been a conduit for finding the necessary suppliers for my fund raising items. This year RideForMike.com is going to be more fun than ever. I’ll owe a lot of that to Chris and Hartzler Haus.

Need branding for your company or idea? Perhaps you want a really cool kit for your organization (or blog!) I recommend Hartzler Haus. Look for more of the work in the days to come. I think you’re going to like it!
