I was looking at the new jeresys for the Tour of California. There was one missing — the one awarded to the Most Aggressive Rider. In its place was the Most Courageous Rider jersey.
Not having heard of that before, I tried to find out what was going on. The Tour of California says they will announce more information about the jersey this week. So, I guess it is possible that by the time you read this my mystery will be solved.
Most Courageous Rider Jersey
The Most Aggressive Rider jersey goes to that rider who perhaps launches multiple attacks or goes off on some solo breakaway that comes close to succeeding. It isn’t normally the winner of a stage or race.
Why change the name for the Tour of California to Most Courageous Rider? Perhaps there are some clues in the jersey itself. You will see that it is sponsored by the Breakaway from Cancer foundation. All the other jerseys feature the Amgen logo prominently. This one features the Breakaway logo.
Plans probably are to use the jersey as a way to promote the fight againt cancer (during the return of Lance Armstrong) and draw attention to the cancer foundation. By the way, George Hincapie is a supporter of the foundation and will be participating in a fund raising event for the organization in San Fransico on February 8. If you are in the area, why not join him?
Well, one word a cancer patient does not want to hear is “aggressive.” The word is typically used to describe a type of cancer that is spreading quickly. On the other hand, “courageous” is a word that well describes a person who has survived or is fighting against cancer.
This would appear to be an attempt to have the name of the jersey be consistent with the people it is being used to signify and support. That would work for me. I like that better than Most Combative Rider jersey as it is sometimes called. I always get the picture of a cyclist bulling his way through the peloton when I hear that one.
There are now only 16 days until someone will have a chance to slide his arms into that green jersey. It is starting to look as though the ToC is going to be a big deal this year. I’m looking forward to it.
Update: From the tangled web of the Internet, I learn that my conjecture is correct.
